Abstract: ROSE HALL, St James - PRESIDENT of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI), Nathan Robb, has called on Government to resurrect the over 500 hotel rooms that are closed along Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay, in an effort to create a special economic zone there."By bringing back on stream these 500 rooms, you are automatically looking at 2,000 employees, not to mention funds that would have gone into the refurbishing and expansion of those properties," Robb argued.Robb was speaking at a luncheon hosted recently by the MBCCI and sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) last week at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, to mark the official start of the Winter Tourist Season. But Minister McNeill argued at the time that while there is an acute need for additional rooms to grow the sector, these "out of service hotels" along the 'Hip Strip' are privately owned, and for the most part, Government's hands are tied in their quest to get them up and running. "As a Government we need rooms, we need all properties open and running. It is something that we are pushing. And as much as we can, we try to facilitate and push it. But many of those things are out of our control. In some cases there are issues to do with receivers, in other cases there are owners who are marching to the beat of their own [drum]," McNeill explained.(
